Carol came in today to our store for the first time. We were chatting about about her amazing collection of anglo-american eyewear - a label that used to make the most amazing fantasy eyewear pieces in the 70's and 80's. Carol even has a pair that emulate the Sydney Opera House. Gotta love that.

This vintage Gianfranco Ferre frame which JUST sold to a lovely lady is such a frame for us....

It was super-sad to see it go. Like a pet that had to go to another home. The only solace is that at least this piece has gone to a great home and a great face .....

One of the most exciting things to come out of our NYC trip was the design collaboration with German eyewear company Wissen. They have been hand making eyewear since the 1950's and we have co-designed a small tightly edited range of high contrast eyewear exclusively for OPTIKO. Amazing textures and acetates - swoon.

Another crazy dinner at Urbane

Normally wouldnt go on about this too much. But Urbane Restaurant HAS to be one of the best restaurants in Australia @ the mo. I know molecular gastronomy has its critics - but sometimes I like to be surprised by my food and gasp a little. Tonight I gasped. Urbane always has us leaving with a twinkle in the eye (specifically the cornea). Carrot dust, honeycomb, licorice, foie gras emulsion, and aerated chocolate (not all on the one plate) with alot of Thomas Keller inspired floral art. Service that is friendly but not invasive and a wine list that invites discussion. Fun. Really.

I remember being in final year of my optometry degree in the mid eighties when I first saw this iconic gianfranco ferre model. The big crystal placed asymetrically was always a winner. Optiko has sourced this exquisite frame in unused condition - we love it and know that it wont last long - however its not for everybody....

This months iconic sunglass wearer is the one and only McQueen. Steve rocked his persols in the Thomas Crown Affair and was rarely seen NOT wearing them after that. Persol have now re-released the exact model he wore with polarised or non-polarised lenses - but they didn't release it in the iconic blue. However OPTIKO has a limited number of the famous 714 custom tinted to the McQueen blue that he made so famous...

When my wife bought me the Madmen dvd set for my Birthday recently - I flipped. She was on the money! We watched it all over 3 nights and instantly noticed the ronsir frames (surrounded by swirling cigarette smoke) that the Harry Crane character wore - OPTIKO has been carrying the ronsir frame since we opened and we have just received another shipment!
